| | Growing up i've always enjoyed playing sports.. all kinds of sports at all different levels, from casual pick-up games to organized leagues. I used to be a lot better than i am now cos i haven't been as active in the last few years, but generally speaking I'm still a competitive person. And to be honest, i'm not bad, not bad at all. Obviously, there are many who are better but as they say, i'm "pretty good for a girl".. whatever that's supposed to mean.
Well, i guess it means that i don't throw like a girl. Which is true. Put a baseball in my hand and i can throw it hard, fast, and accurately. I can throw a baseball better than most guys i've met. I can definitely catch better than a lot of guys. But the best reactions i get is when i throw a football. For some reason, nobody expects that a girl can throw a football. I literally get dumbfounded looks from guys when they see me throw. I get girls coming up to me, asking to show them how to throw a spiral. I think guys who can't throw secretly want to ask too. Whenever there's a mandatory "2 girls on a team" sorta deal, i'm often asked to play. I own more sports memorabilia than any diehard fan i know. So fairly enough, i'm told by the boys, "i'm one of the guys."
But women don't want to hear that they're one of the guys. I don't want to hear that. I know what you mean and i appreciate the sentiment, but it's not something i want to hear. Yes, I still enjoy talking about sports. I still want to play hard. I still want to win. But i don't want to be one of you. Any man who has gained some insight on how women are wired will understand why we don't respond to "you're one of the guys!" If you don't know why this is something we don't want to hear, feel free to come up to me and ask about it. (Instead asking how to throw a football, perhaps.)
PS, i bet i can beat you in Street Fighter as well. =p |
